Introduction
The versatile and precise LTC В®2053 instrumentation
ampliп¬Ѓer provides an excellent platform for robust, low
power instrumentation productsвЂ”as exempliп¬Ѓed below
by the battery-powered thermocouple ampliп¬Ѓer circuit.
The LTC2053 offers exceptionally low 10ОјV maximum
input offset along with 116dB typical CMRR and PSRR,
a result of a combination of switched capacitor and zerodrift op amp technologies. It is optimized for low voltage
supplies from 2.7V to 11V single ended or up to В±5.5V with
split supplies. The LTC2053 is ideal for battery-powered
instrument applications because of its low 850ОјA typical
current draw. The gain is easily programmed with two
resistors, as shown in Figure 1, just like a traditional
non-inverting op amp. The LTC2053 also features low
1/f noise and rail-to-rail I/O to maximize dynamic range.
The Requirements of Thermocouple Ampliп¬Ѓcation
A robust thermocouple ampliп¬Ѓcation circuit must meet
several speciп¬Ѓc requirements. First, a commonly used

In most cases the switching based
approach is preferable to maintain
high efficiency. Occasionally a linear
controller is desirable because it eliminates inductors and saves space. A
trade off in the linear approach is
heat dissipation, which makes it useful in applications where space is
premium, and the extra heat is manageable.
Figure 1 shows the linear controller. The LTC2053 chopper stabilized
instrumentation amplifier extracts an
error signal from a bridge network.
One bridge leg is a thermistor temperature sensor located within the

Introduction
The LTC2053 is the industryвЂ™s first
instrumentation amplifier to feature
a rail-to-rail input/output and a very
high CMRR (guaranteed Common
Mode Rejection Ratio of 110dB) that
is gain-independent. This allows precision extraction of wide range of
differential DC signals, from microvolts to volts, with common mode
voltages anywhere between the supply rails.
The LTC2053 uses sophisticated
charge balanced techniques to convert a differential input voltage into a
single ended signal. Figure 1 shows
the structure of the device in a simplified block diagram. A set of switches
extract and store the input differential voltage across an internal
sampling capacitor CS. This charge is
then transferred into an internal hold
capacitor, CH. With this operation,
the differential input signal is extracted from the input common mode
voltage and is referenced to the bias

The LTCВ®6915 is the simplest, most
precise way to obtain digitally programmable voltage gain. Any system
which needs accurate ampliп¬Ѓcation of
small differential voltages and rejection of large common mode signals will
beneп¬Ѓt from the LTC6915.
The LTC6915 is an evolution of the
LTC2053, a precision rail-to-rail input
and output, zero-drift instrumentation
ampliп¬Ѓer. Due to the ampliп¬ЃerвЂ™s very
low DC errors, very high levels of gain
can be taken in a single stage. The
LTC2053 uses external resistors to set
the gain; the LTC6915 uses a serial
port or a parallel port to select internal
resistors, and therefore select the gain.
The gain can be programmed to 0, 1, 2,
4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024,
2048, or 4096. Programmable gain
increases the dynamic range of any …
