  Introduction
  Over the past several years Linear Technology, the magazine, has come of age. From nothing, the publication has
  come into its own, as has its subscriber list. Many innovative circuits have seen the light of day in the pages of our
  now hallowed publication. This Application Note is meant to consolidate the circuits
  from the first few years of the magazine in one place.
  Circuits herein range from laser diode driver circuits to
  data acquisition systems to a 50W high efficiency switcher
  circuit. Enough said. I’ll stand aside and let the authors
  explain their circuits.

  INTRODUCTION
  This application note features 8-, 10-, and 12-bit data
  acquisition components in various circuit configurations.
  The circuits include battery monitoring, temperature sensing, isolated serial interfaces, and microprocessor and
  microcontroller serial and parallel interfaces. Also included are voltage reference circuits (Application Note 42
  contains more voltage reference circuits). Additional circuit information is located in the information
  references listed in the Circuit Index. Each information
  reference refers to either an application note (example:

  Kevin R. Hoskins Many portable and battery-powered systems require
  internal analog-to-digital conversion. Some, such as
  pen-based computers, have ADCs at their very cores
  digitizing the pen screen. Other systems use ADCs more
  peripherally to monitor voltages or other parameters
  inside the equipment. Regardless of the use, it has been
  difficult to obtain small ADCs at power levels and prices
  that are low enough. The LTC1286/LTC1298 meet these
  low power dissipation and package size needs.
  Micropower and 12-Bits in an SO-8 Package
  The LTC1286/LTC1298 are the latest members of the
  growing family of SO-8 packaged parts (TableВ  1).
  As the п¬Ѓrst of their kind in SO-8 packages, these are
  improvements to the 8-bit micropower LTC1096/
  LTC1098 ADCs. The LTC1286/LTC1298 use a successive approximation register (SAR) architecture. Both
  converters contain sample-and-holds and serial data

  The LTC В®1096 and LTC1098 are the lowest power,
  most compact, sampling analog-to-digital converters
  in the world. These new 8-bit micropower, sampling
  ADCs typically draw 100ОјA of supply current when
  sampling at 33kHz. Supply current drops linearly as
  the sample rate is reduced as shown in Figure 1. At a
  1kHz sample rate, the supply current is only 3ОјA. The
  ADCs automatically power down when not performing
  conversions, drawing only leakage current. will run off a Panasonic CR1632 3V lithium coin cell
  for п¬Ѓve years.
  The automatic shutdown has great advantages over
  the alternative of high side switching a higher power
  ADC, shown in Figure 3. First, no switching signal or
  hardware is required. Second, power consumption is
