  Introduction
  Monolithic step-down converters capable of operation at
  high input voltages are usually optimized for efficiency
  at high input-to-output voltage differentials. At such low
  duty cycle operation where DC switch losses are less
  critical, the switch design is often neglected, resulting in
  a switch resistance that (for some 1.5A converters) can
  be as poor as 1Ω. Such converters sacrifice efficiency
  when lower input-to-output voltage differentials are
  required. The switch drop can also limit maximum duty
  cycle—putting a limit on the minimum input voltage
  for a given regulated output voltage.
  The LT®1766 is designed to optimize efficiency for both
  high and low input-to-output voltage differentials to
  support a wide input voltage range. In addition, the
  current mode topology used to provide fast transient
  response and good loop stability does not suffer from
  peak switch current fall off at low input-to-output voltage differentials, commonplace in most current mode
  converters.

  Introduction
  Faster data transfer requirements between a personal
  computer and an increasing number of peripheral devices have boosted the popularity of the IEEE 1394 High
  Performance Serial Bus (FireWire technology), which
  enables speeds up to 400Mbps. FireWire technology
  is п¬Ѓnding its way into real time data transfer and data
  intensive devices such as DVD players, digital video
  recorders, zip drives and CDRW drives. There is a
  growing need for cost effective, low profile, low ripple
  DC/DC power supplies that provide 5V and 3.3V peripheral power directly from the FireWire cable at high
  currents (1A or greater). The LTВ®1766 and LT3430 current mode regulators will satisfy these requirements.
  Circuit Descriptions
  FireWire power sources, such as personal computers,
  provide 8V to 40V to the FireWire serial bus at currents
  of up to 1.5A and can power up to 16 peripherals while
  transferring data synchronously or asynchronously.
  Power sink peripherals, which do not supply power
  to the serial bus, receive power from the serial bus
  via the two power pins of the 6-pin FireWire port.

  Introduction
  With a maximum input voltage capability of 60V and peak switch current
  of 1.5A, the LT1766 is targeted for
  high voltage, industrial and automotive applications. The 60V maximum
  operating input voltage makes the
  LT1766 ideal for 12V, 24V and (future)
  42V automotive systems, which must
  survive load-dump input transients
  as high as 60V. At high input-tooutput voltage differentials, power
  dissipation is minimized by providing
  very fast switch edge rates and by
  using a BIAS pin connected to the
  regulated output to supply internal
  control circuitry. At low input-tooutput voltage dif ferentials, a
  VIN supply-boost capacitor is used to fully
  saturate an internal 200mΩ power
  switch to reduce DC switch losses.
  The LT1766 runs at a fixed frequency
